What is a Return Panel?
A return panel is a side panel that connects the face hoarding run back to the shopfront, lease line or wall. Returns close off the ends of the hoarding, creating a fully enclosed works area and preventing public access to the construction zone from the sides.
Fixing Method
Return panels are fixed perpendicular to the face hoarding panels. They connect to the face panel studs at the end of the run.
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Connection | Return panel stud to face panel stud |
| Screw Type | 65mm 10G Chipboard Screws |
| Fixing Points | Top, Middle, Bottom |
Corner Braces
All return panel junctions require either an offset upright or corner braces for structural reinforcement. If an offset upright can be positioned at the return junction, corner braces are not required. If not, 70×35mm MGP10 corner braces must be installed at the top and bottom — see Corner Brace Detail.
Return Panel Sizing
Return panels are typically shorter than face panels — their width is determined by the distance from the face of the hoarding back to the shopfront or lease line. Return panels use the same construction as standard panels:
- Frame: 70×35mm MGP10 Timber
- Skin: 9mm MDF or Plywood
- Height matches the face panels exactly
- Width is custom-cut to suit the site dimensions
Installation Notes
- Ensure the return panel is square to the face panel before fixing
- If the return meets a wall or shopfront glass, leave a small gap to avoid damage
- Consider using foam packing between the return panel and the shopfront for protection
- The return panel must be the same height as the face panels
