Panel vs Practical Hoardings

Which NXGN hoarding system is right for your project?

Two Systems, One Standard

The NXGN Hoarding System is available in two configurations: Panel Hoardings (pre-fabricated off-site) and Practical Hoardings (built on-site from hardware store materials). Both systems use the same engineered mild steel uprights, TF Block Standard counterweights, and comply with AS 4687:2022 — the Australian Standard for Temporary Fencing and Hoardings.

The key difference is in how the hoarding is built and deployed. Panel Hoardings arrive as complete, ready-to-install units manufactured in a controlled environment, while Practical Hoardings are built entirely on-site using standard hardware store materials. Understanding the strengths of each system helps you choose the right approach for your project.

Panel Hoardings

Panel Hoardings are pre-fabricated off-site in a factory or workshop environment, then transported to site as complete panel units ready for installation.

Build Method

Panels are constructed off-site with 9mm MDF or Plywood (SK) fixed to a 70×35mm MGP10 timber frame comprising studs (ST), top plate (TP), and bottom plate (BP). Panels arrive ready to install — no on-site framing required.

Connection

Panels are screwed together through panel studs using 65mm 10G chipboard screws at top, middle, and bottom fixings. Separate return panels and dedicated splay panels handle corners and direction changes.

Installation Speed

Fastest installation method — panels arrive factory-finished and ready to stand up. Minimal on-site labour required, making this the go-to for time-critical installations.

Reusability

High reusability — panels can be stripped back, sanded, repainted and redeployed between hires. Factory-controlled quality means consistent finish for every installation.

Practical Hoardings

Practical Hoardings are assembled entirely on-site — skin sheets are screwed directly to timber studs that sit in the NXGN upright stud receivers.

Build Method

9mm MDF or Plywood skin screwed directly to timber studs on-site. Studs sit in upright stud receivers — no separate panel frame is needed. All framing, skinning, and finishing happens at the installation location.

Customisation

Fully custom — any size, shape, or angle can be built on-site. Returns, splays, and doorway frames are all constructed to fit the exact space. Ideal for irregular or non-standard layouts.

Material Sourcing

All materials available from any hardware store in Australia and New Zealand — Bunnings, Mitre 10, or local timber suppliers. No need to wait for manufactured panels to be delivered.

Remote Sites

Perfect for remote or hard-to-access sites where truck delivery of pre-built panels is impractical. Materials can be sourced locally, cutting out logistics complexity.

Side-by-Side Comparison

A detailed comparison of the two NXGN hoarding systems across every key factor.

Factor Panel Hoarding Practical Hoarding
Build Location Off-site (factory/workshop) On-site
Skin Material 9mm MDF or Plywood on timber frame 9mm MDF or Plywood screwed to studs
Frame 70×35mm MGP10 timber (ST/TP/BP) Timber studs in upright receivers
Installation Speed Faster — panels arrive ready to install Slower — framing and skinning on-site
Customisation Standard panel sizes Fully custom — any size/shape on-site
Transport Requires truck (panels are bulky) Materials from local hardware store
Reusability High — panels stripped, sanded, repainted Lower — site-built, may not be reusable
Quality Consistency High — factory-controlled finish Variable — depends on installer
Best For Repeat/standard installs, rental fleets One-off custom shapes, remote sites
Returns Separate return panel components Built continuously on-site
Splay Panels Dedicated splay panel units Cut and framed on-site
Door Openings Pre-fabricated door head panels Doorway frame built on-site
