Practical Hoarding Construction Notes

Standards compliance, material specifications & general rules for site-assembled hoardings

What are Practical Hoardings?

Practical Hoardings are NXGN hoardings that are assembled entirely on-site, rather than being pre-fabricated off-site like Panel Hoardings. They use readily available hardware store materials — 70×45mm MGP10 timber for the frame and 9mm MDF or Plywood for the skin — making them ideal for projects where pre-fabricated panel transport is not feasible or where custom site dimensions require flexible construction.

Standards & Compliance

All Practical Hoardings must comply with AS 4687:2022 — Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. The system is classified as "internal temporary hoarding" under this standard. The same compliance requirements apply as for Panel Hoardings.

Critical Requirements
  • All dimensions are in millimetres — do not scale drawings
  • Installation, moving or alteration must be performed by a competent installer only
  • No substitution of materials or components without structural engineer approval
  • Hoardings are not designed for additional loading
  • Timber must be free of defects at joints
  • Uprights must be free of cracks and structural defects
  • Weight blocks per NXGN Structural Drawings

Key Difference from Panel Hoardings

The primary difference between Practical and Panel Hoardings is the timber frame size:

SystemFrame TimberAssembly
Panel Hoardings70×35mm MGP10Pre-fabricated off-site
Practical Hoardings70×45mm MGP10Assembled on-site

The larger 70×45mm timber in Practical Hoardings provides additional rigidity for on-site assembly where the construction tolerance may be less precise than a factory environment.

Applicable Standards

  • AS 4687.3:2022 — Temporary Fencing and Hoardings (Impact Testing)
  • AS 4687.1:2022 — Temporary Fencing and Hoardings (General Requirements)
  • AS 1720.1:2010 — Timber Structures Code
  • AS 1684.2:2021 — Timber Framing Code
  • AS 1859.1:2017 — Reconstituted Wood-based Panels
