What are Practical Hoardings?
Practical Hoardings are NXGN hoardings that are assembled entirely on-site, rather than being pre-fabricated off-site like Panel Hoardings. They use readily available hardware store materials — 70×45mm MGP10 timber for the frame and 9mm MDF or Plywood for the skin — making them ideal for projects where pre-fabricated panel transport is not feasible or where custom site dimensions require flexible construction.
Standards & Compliance
All Practical Hoardings must comply with AS 4687:2022 — Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. The system is classified as "internal temporary hoarding" under this standard. The same compliance requirements apply as for Panel Hoardings.
Critical Requirements
- All dimensions are in millimetres — do not scale drawings
- Installation, moving or alteration must be performed by a competent installer only
- No substitution of materials or components without structural engineer approval
- Hoardings are not designed for additional loading
- Timber must be free of defects at joints
- Uprights must be free of cracks and structural defects
- Weight blocks per NXGN Structural Drawings
Key Difference from Panel Hoardings
The primary difference between Practical and Panel Hoardings is the timber frame size:
| System | Frame Timber | Assembly |
|---|---|---|
| Panel Hoardings | 70×35mm MGP10 | Pre-fabricated off-site |
| Practical Hoardings | 70×45mm MGP10 | Assembled on-site |
The larger 70×45mm timber in Practical Hoardings provides additional rigidity for on-site assembly where the construction tolerance may be less precise than a factory environment.
