Primary Skin Fixing
The 9mm MDF or Plywood skin is fixed to the Practical Hoarding frame using 35mm 10G Chipboard Screws at regular intervals along the upright studs (UR ST).
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Screw Type | 35mm 10G Chipboard Screws |
| Spacing on Upright Studs (UR ST) | 350mm centres |
| Spacing on Door Head Frame | 300mm centres |
| Edge Distance | Minimum 15mm from skin edge |
Additional Stud Requirements
In certain situations, additional studs are required to provide fixing points for the skin where the standard upright stud spacing does not coincide with the skin edge or joint:
- Returns — an additional stud is required at the return edge where the skin meets the return panel
- Splays — an additional stud is required at the splay junction
- Hoardings with no returns — an additional stud at the hoarding end
Skin Joint Detail
Skin sheets meet at each upright stud (UR ST). Both skin sheets are fixed to the same stud, creating a continuous face. Ensure:
- Both skin edges are centred on the stud
- Skin edges are tight together — no gap between sheets
- Screws are driven flush with the skin surface — not over-driven
- The skin face is smooth and consistent across the joint
Material Standards
- 9mm MDF — must comply with AS 1859.1:2017 (Reconstituted Wood-based Panels)
- 9mm Plywood — structural grade plywood
- Either material is acceptable — MDF provides a smoother surface for painting, Plywood provides greater moisture resistance
